D2's Sharpening Challenge
D2 tool steel (often used in EDC knives like CIVIVI, QSP, and $50-100 folders) offers excellent edge retention but is notoriously difficult to sharpen due to its high vanadium carbide content. Many sharpeners struggle with D2, and choosing the right abrasive makes all the difference.
Why D2 Is Hard to Sharpen
D2 contains chromium carbides (Cr7C3) and vanadium carbides (VC). Vanadium carbides are harder than most traditional sharpening media. Standard aluminum oxide stones (the tan/brown stones common in hardware stores) cannot effectively cut these carbides, leading to slow sharpening and inconsistent edges.
Diamond vs Ceramic Comparison
Diamond Stones Tested
DMT DuoSharp 325/1200 grit, with monocrystalline diamond abrasive. Sharpening time: ~12-15 minutes from moderately dull to hair-shaving. Edge quality: crisp, slightly aggressive. Ease of use: excellent; cuts quickly with minimal pressure.
Ceramic Stones Tested
Spyderco Medium (equivalent ~1000 grit) and Fine (~2000 grit) ceramic stones. Sharpening time: ~25-30 minutes from same dullness. Edge quality: smooth, polished. Ease of use: good but much slower.
Results Summary
| Abrasive | Time to Sharp | Edge Quality | Relative Ease |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond | 12-15 min | Aggressive, toothy | Excellent |
| Ceramic | 25-30 min | Smooth, polished | Good |
| Combination | 18-20 min | Best overall | Very good |
Recommended Approach
Start with diamond stones (coarse to medium) to remove metal efficiently and set the bevel, then finish with fine ceramic for polish. This combination achieves the best balance of speed and edge quality. For field sharpening, a compact diamond stone is the superior choice โ it will still cut when ceramic struggles.
For D2 steel, diamond is clearly superior to ceramic for primary sharpening. It cuts faster, works more predictably, and doesn't wear out. Ceramic stones can finish a D2 edge beautifully but are too slow for major material removal. If you only have budget for one sharpener for D2 knives, buy a diamond stone. The DMT DuoSharp or equivalent provides the best results in reasonable time.
